We normally use any in question sentences, conditional ‘if/whether/unless’ sentences and negative statements; we use some in positive statements:
Have you got any information about sales policy? There are some notes in the file on my desk. |
Question Sentences
Do you have any idea when Mr Paul will return? Have you received any documents from Pistle Canon Ltd? |
Conditional Sentences
If you have any queries, please contact me. If we have any stock, we will send them to you today. |
Negative Sentences
We won’t place any orders this month. We don’t have any staff with this knowledge. |
However, we often use some in questions if the question is an offer or request, or if we expect the answer to be ‘yes’:
Would you like me to send you some more information? Could I take some samples with me? |
Also we use any in positive statements where the real sense is negative:
I refused to give them any money. (I did not give them any money) She finished the test without any difficulty. (she did not have any difficulty) |
