When visiting some friends or when entertaining, the first few minutes of your conversation can help set the scene and help relax you particularly if you are not used to using English in these types of situations. This posting looks at some useful language for this common situation of entertaining guests or being entertained based on the criteria of Apologising, Thanking, Offering and Making initial compliments.

APOLOGISING
We’re sorry we’re late.
Traffic was terrible/We couldn’t find a car-parking space/There was a problem with the MTRC.

GIVING A GIFT
Just a little something for you.
Thank you for inviting us. I have brought you this bottle of wine. Here you are, just a small token.

THANKING
Thank you. It’s/They’re beautiful/lovely. (a gift, flowers)
Thank you very much.
That’s very kind of you.
Thank you, but you shouldn’t have.
Thank you for inviting me. Your house is lovely.

RESPONDING
I’m glad you like it/them.

COMPLIMENTING
Be careful on complimenting about appearance.
You look wonderful in that dress.
You look lovely.

OFFERING
Please come in. Would you like …?
Can I get you …?
What would you like to drink?
Let me take your coats/jacket.

RESPONDING
No problem, you are here now.
That’s fine, we are still waiting on a few guests to arrive.

DECLINING
