Seems I was told by my teacher in secondary school, it should be better than I as it implies "better than I am". Is this correct?
Most people say better than me and it sounds correct too.

I have never heard anyone ever say "better than I." "Better than me," on the other hand, is a very common phrase, and sounds the more natural of the two phrases.
