writingCoherence and unity are two of the most important aspects of effective business writing. A good paragraph needs to have both coherence and unity. But what exactly do we mean by coherence and unity?

A PARAGRAPH WITH UNITY

A paragraph should concern itself with a single focus. If it begins with one focus or major point of discussion, it should not end with another or wander within different ideas.

A PARAGRAPH WITH COHERENCE

Coherence means that each part of the paragraph appears to be 'connected' and heading towards a single conclusion or goal. Coherent paragraphs appear to flow naturally and easily in both style and sense. Each idea is related in a way that helps build towards an overall controlling idea, conclusion or theme in the text.

WHAT IS A GOOD PARAGRAPH?

A well-written paragraph has UNITY: it should convey only one central idea, although it may be made up of several sentences each containing a separate thought. All these thoughts should direct towards the central idea as shown in the figure below.
