When describing movements on a graph, we can use verbs and nouns to talk about upward, downward or horizontal movements. Graphs are used to describe data collected in the past, so you generally will need to use verbs in the past simple tense. Some, but not all verbs, have a noun form. To add variety to the structure of your sentences, we recommend you use a mix of verb and noun phrases when you describe graphical data. See the table below:
