But India is going through major changes, too, and the opening of its economy has transformed this once sleeping giant into a global centre of hi-tech software with a quickly expanding middle class.

These changes can be seen clearly in Gurgaon, a suburb of the nation’s capital, Delhi, which has been transformed from a muddy collection of villages into a wealthy neighbourhood full of western-style housing and the headquarters of a number of multinational companies.

As India changes, more and more of its educated elite are returning from abroad and bringing their skills and experience with them.
